In designing this magazine cover I tried to focus in on multiple media language techniques. The first and most crucial technique used to influence readers of this article is the emotional appeal technique which correlates to the picture of the child crying and struggling with school work at her desk. This technique also is used in the title of the article “What Common Core could mean for YOUR child”, as well as, the Brad Paisley headline which reads he “explains his Common Core fears”.  The previous explained article quotes also fall into the category of the next technique used, which is loaded language. I also tried to integrate the plain folk technique by stating the fact that Paisley is a WV native and a father. Paisley also comes into play with the celebrity spokesperson technique as he is most definitely admired and respected, especially in his home state of WV. I also would argue the fact that the Brad Paisley reference could be additionally labeled as a bandwagon technique, hence the fact that he is a father and from WV and refers to himself and is seen in most West Virginian’s  eyes as “one of us”.  If Brad fears it, it must be bad..?

The text of this is article/magazine cover is merely that Common Core is something parents should fear for their children. I believe that the Text within this cover is prevalent.. especially with the large bold print and enticing phrases used such as fear and the ugly truth (along with the techniques). Which leads into the subtext, which I believe is straight forward as well. Common Core is something that parents should fear. Common Core is something that parents should be against. Then again, I created this cover.. so I am rather prejudice on this statement. What are your thoughts?

  1. Chelsea,
Looking at your magazine cover, the picture immediately caught my eye. The little girl looks so upset and I think that it goes right along with your title for you cover story. You really draw your readers in with having Brad Paisley on the front and the magazine title. "The Ugly Truth" really makes people want to find out what they are missing about certain things and common core is what they are wanting to read more about for this article. Seeing "Urgent Education Issue" on the title also draws you in because you want to know what is going on in education today. Looking at your cover I am able to see what you think about Common Core. You used great buzz words to get your readers wanting to know more. Great Job!

  2. Chelsea,
Your magazine cover instantly grabbed my attention! I can tell from just one look that your stance. Your title alone tells me that you aren’t the biggest fan of the CCSS. The words that you use, such as ugly, fears, facts, and urgent, are words that could make readers feel very strongly against the issue at hand. The picture of Brad and his family is a good persuasive technique that could makes readers feel more apt to think what he think because he is from WV and he is famous so “well if Brad Paisley fears the CC, then I should too”. Overall, I think that you did an awesome job with this activity and that your cover really displays you stance and has the potential to suck the reader in and make them feel what you feel. Keep up the good work!! :)

  3. Chelsea,
I think you did a great job at conveying a negative connotation towards the idea of Common Core. I really liked your idea of using Brad Paisley and his thoughts towards Common Core. Seriously, if Brad doesn't like it, how can it be good?! Also, your use of the title "The Ugly Truth" in bright red bold letters is really eye grabbing. The use of words like "urgent" and the use of a black and white picture of a little girl crying really creates a full on rhetorical war against Common Core.
    Great job!

  4. You did a really good job on your cover! You can really feel the negativity coming from it. The crying child is a really good touch for this. She looks miserable at the idea of having to be a part of Common Core curriculum. You're use of a celebrity spokesperson, and the picture used as well, are also really good for your stance. I also really like your word choice. The use of words like "ugly truth" and "urgent" really grab your attention.
