Language is the most fundamental symbol system of humanity
and every student needs to appreciate how powerful it is in shaping our
understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
I found this quote interesting, as after reading it I was
taken back to my high school world history class. I recall the text for the
class be very vague and “boringly” written; for the lack of better terms. Myself,
as well as my classmates absolutely dreaded reading information on our own from
that book. However, we were lucky enough to have an excellent teacher. Although
we did have to read the endless dates and flat lines of texts, his lectures
brought the history to life. He spoke in great detail and used many action
words, most times he even acted things out very dramatically. He brought
pictures to class to display, and videos, and sometimes he was even able to get
his hands on a piece of equipment or a memento from that era/war. For example, I
remember him bringing in a WW2 medal and a soldier’s uniform, as well as,
actual pictures of the barracks and concentration camps. He was able to bring the history to life for
us so that we could and would want to remember it, whereas the text we read
went in one ear and out the other.
